If you develop a disability and you are unable to perform your work as a result, you should look into your options for obtaining some sort of disability benefits. The type of disability benefits you will be able to access will depend on the circumstances regarding your disability. If you are injured at work, you may be able to file for workers’ compensation benefits. If you have a low income, you may be able to qualify for cash benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA).

If you are considering taking out disability insurance or you have recently become disabled and want to explore your options, you should first learn about the differences between long- and short-term disability benefits.

Short-term disability insurance

You may choose to purchase short-term disability insurance if you want to avoid losing wages for illnesses lasting six months or less. This can be a great option for you if you already have long-term disability coverage through an employer. It’s also a very sensible thing to do if you have a limited amount of savings.

Long-term disability insurance

Long-term disability insurance usually comes into effect after you have been unable to work due to disability for around three to six months. You will receive up to 70% of your previous salary depending on the insurance policy that you have. If you become disabled for a longer period of time, you will likely be able to claim long-term disability benefits up to the age of 75.

If you are suffering from a disability and you are losing wages as a result, you should investigate your options to gain compensation through an insurance plan.
