Many people have health issues from time to time that can affect their ability to be productive at work. While many of these people may have become temporarily disabled because of this, only a few will be recognized as legally disabled and eligible for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits.
If you are having difficulties in being able to work because of a medical condition, you should take the time to understand how disabilities are assessed by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Five questions are asked by the SSA to determine whether you may qualify for disability benefits.
Are you employed?
If you are currently able to earn a significant income, it is unlikely that you will be able to qualify for disability benefits.
Is your condition severe?
You will only be considered eligible if your condition is severe enough to impact your ability to carry out basic tasks.
Does the SSA recognize your condition?
The SSA has a list of medical conditions that they recognize as being disabling. Your condition should generally appear here in some form.
Can you carry out the job that you previously performed?
You should be able to show that your employment is no longer a viable option for you because of your condition.
Can you work in any capacity?
You should also be able to show that you are unable to carry out other forms of meaningful work that would generate a significant income.
If you are struggling with a disability, you may be able to gain benefits from the government that will help you financially while you are unable to work.
