The 2 types of Social Security Disability benefits

When you are suffering from a long-term disability, it is likely that this has had a significant impact on the way that you go about your daily life. In addition, it will probably have determined the extent to which you are able to earn money. This is why there are two federal programs in place to mitigate the financial impact that mental and physical disabilities have.

The two federal programs in place are Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI). If you want to file for disability benefits in Missouri, the program that you should apply for will depend on your career history and other circumstances. It is important, therefore, that you understand the difference between the two types of Social Security benefits.

Social Security Disability Insurance

Social Security Disability Insurance is available to those suffering a disability who have earned enough credits through payroll tax during their career. You must have earned a minimum of 20 quarters of coverage (QCs) in the past 10 years in order to make a claim.

Supplemental Security Income

If you have not earned enough QCs through your payroll in the last 10 years, applying for SSI disability benefits might be the best option for you. These benefits prioritize current need from a financial perspective, and they do not require that applicants have accumulated QCs.

If you want to apply for SSD benefits, it is very important that you are able to prove your disability. You will also need to provide personal information about your marital status and any dependents that you have.
